Introduction into the ECMIMIM project
A. Noack (Technische Universität Dresden) and G. Baer (Dept. of Mathematics, Dresden University of Technology)
We introduce the main ideas of the ECMIMIM project the aim of which is to establish a set of model curricula of European Master Programmes in Industrial Mathematics. The creation of the curricula shall be based on the existing European ECMI programmes for techno- and econo-mathematics (leading to a certificate if successfully attended) as well as on the experiences of the partner universities in generating local master programmes for Industrial Mathematics, Techno- and Econo-Mathematics.
The model programm shall give a kind of standard curriculum on a general level and thus shall contain all the important building blocks required to qualify students to future mathematician of Industrial Mathematics. But on the other hand it has to be not too restrictive to allow certain differences in the implementation of this international master programme at each of the participating universities. In a first step it shall be implemented at the partner universities but is intended to be spread all over Europe.
The contributions to the minisymposium will give an important input into the aspect of modelling activities to be implemented in the model curriculum.
Mathematical modelling and applications in Engineering Science has a long tradition at Dresden University of Technology. Therefore, it was a quite natural step that the department of mathematics joined the ECMI about 15 years ago.
Since that time different tasks from industrial partners had been solved by students and graduates. These solutions found entry in diploma theses or dissertations and the students reached ECMI Certificates. Varied experiences are shown and discussed.
