Batting strategy and the distribution of runs scored in test cricket

We model the distribution of runs scored in a partnership in test cricket using a negative binomial distribution. In particular, the association between the run-rate and runs scored is modelled. This model then allows us to consider optimal batting strategy for a team batting third in a test match and aiming to set a target for the team batting last.
