Mathematical Modelling in Sport
P. Scarf (Centre for OR and Applied Statistics, Salford Business School, University of Salford)
Sport is a significant branch of the entertainment industry, and is an important part of the lives of many people and not just the athletes themselves. Interest in Sport is also growing among mathematicians. There are opportunities to work with the sports industry, tackle interesting decision problems in this industry, to publish research applied to sport, and to generate good publicity for mathematics. The so-called “Duckworth Lewis method”, used for setting revised targets in rain-interrupted one-day cricket matches, is a case in point. Sport itself requires little definition; we just note that the terms sport and the sports industry will be interpreted liberally and contributions to the mini-symposium are broad ranging and widely appealing.
