Heart of data assimilation is to be able to exploit in same framework information coming from various sources. Those sources are coming from measurement and modeling. The availability of data and modeling is such that many topics can be involved in data assimilation. It is obvious that all the information staking allows to improve global accuracy of data or/and model. Such consideration has interest beyond the meteorological science (which is the active root of the technique) and beyond academic world. Thus, those techniques are gradually spreading toward other field of science and to operational industrial applications.

To fulfil this mutation optimally in other subject, it appears that several adaptations are necessary. The data assimilation nowadays is more and more touching industrial applications, leading to drastic evolution of the subject. These new fields of application open wide opportunities of development for data assimilation. The various topics that can be cover and the specific operational need of each field lead to interesting development within data assimilation standard methods.

The aim of the present symposium is to provide an overview of operational use of data assimilation. The presentations will cover topics from the most recent meteorological applications to data assimilation in nuclear core. For those topics, beyond the sharp scientific aspects, they need to respect to some technological rules within the constraints of operational procedures. Within this framework, it's worth to recall for example that the nowadays meteorological predictions are fulfilling such constrain.

Thus, the seminar will present the context and aims, as well as data assimilation employed in the respective field of each speaker. It is expected to lead toward fruitful exchanges on methodologies, opportunities and fundamental techniques on data assimilations.
