CO2 sequestration and hydrocarbons: challenges for the future

A. Woods (BP Institute, University of Cambridge)

In this talk we will discuss some of the challenges associated with the sequestration of CO2 in deep saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas fields; such sequestration may play a key role in future mitigation of CO2 emissions associated with the use of hydrocarbons. We will develop a series of simplified models to describe the dispersion of plumes of CO2 in the subsurface over periods of 100-1000's of years, and compare the model predictions with analogue laboratory experiments, and we will discuss some of the implications of the model predictions.
