MAS – a Web based master in applied statistics

P. Larsen (University of Southern Denmark, Denmark) and H. Rootzén (Technical University of Denmark, Denmark)

In 2002, four Danish research- and educational institutions engaged in jointly developing a 2½-years’ part time Web based master degree in applied statistics to answer the increasing demand for statisticians in as well the private as the public sector in Denmark. The flexibility in terms of time and place of the Internet and the quality of Web based learning platforms – even then – advocated for a Web based course.
As the course was the first of its kind in Demark, the many possibilities available in Web based learning were considered thoroughly to optimise the use of learning platforms, and to develop a corresponding frame for electronic teaching material. The course was first presented in 2003, and has by now completed two full runs.

This talk will present and discuss the general objectives of the course, and the implementation of these to teaching through a Web based learning platform and to a diverse student body with different professional and educational backgrounds.
