The Application of Wavelet Analysis for the Detection of Planetary Wave Type Oscillations in the Ionospheric Total Electron Content

C. Borries (University of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg, Germany / DRL, Institute of Communications and Navigation Neustrelitz, Germany)

This work aims to prove the influence of Planetary Waves (PW) on the ionosphere using hemispheric Total Electron Content (TEC) maps regularly produced by the DLR since 2001. PW are large scale waves strongly affecting the dynamics of the middle atmosphere. The ionosphere is part of the upper atmosphere at altitudes between 60 and 1000km and characterized by its ionized components.
The waves found in the TEC maps will be characterized by zonal wavelength, period and zonal propagation. The Fourier transform and the continuous wavelet transform are used complementary for the spectral analyses of the data set.
