In the last few years, the analysis of material flows in production and logistics networks has received considerable scientific interest. This contribution focuses on the dynamics of material flows in supply chains under pull, push or mixed production strategies. For this purpose, we generalize a mathematical input-output model of commodity flows recently introduced by Helbing et al., and carry out a detailed analysis.

In particular, we investigate under which conditions the effect of instabilities such as the Bullwhip effect can be minimized. Our results are then applied to study a particular small-scale real-world production system.
