Mathematical methods are well established as a valuable tools for data analysis, modelling and simulation in industry, which are implemented in easy to use software packages. Today industry needs mathematics, but does it need mathematicians? Can industry inspire mathematical research, and can mathematical research help industry to achieve quantum leap innovations?

We will discuss the structures of industrial research and its implications for mathematics as well as some areas of industrial research where new mathematical approaches might help to realize breakthrough innovation.
